Many other spells which immobilize targets are informally referred to as "Root" spells, including [[Enstill]], [[Immobilize]], [[Grasping Roots]], [[Hungry Earth]], etc. All of these spells have common qualities, such as randomly breaking early, being randomly broken sometimes by direct-damage spells, and causing [[rooted behavior]] in NPCs.

Spells which reduce movement speed somewhat, but not necessarily completely, are called [[Snare]] spells. Snare spells are generally more reliable, longer lasting and do not change the hate behavior of NPCs.

Root spells lend to a strategy of solo casters called "root rotting", where a caster roots the enemy, casts one or more damage-over-time spells on them, and waits for them to die. Nukes are more compatible with [[snare]] spells, as they do not cause them to break like root.
