Notes:  Either does not drop from snow griffons and elder snow griffons in the far south of Eastern Wastes, or only one egg up allowed at a time.  We kill ~25 elder snow griffons in the deeps south of zone with no drops.  Got 2 for 3 drops in the middle of the zone.  Not sure if thus only one allowed in zone at a time or location was key factor.

UPDATE: June 2018, killed Elder and regular Snow Griffons between Sleepers and CC. In 45 min we got 3 eggs from the elder snow griffons and 1 egg from the regular snow griffons in the area.

Go to loc -7000, 1200 in Eastern Wastes. An Elder Snow Griffin and a Snow Griffin spawn close to it, and another pathes by it. The Elders have a far greater chance of dropping an egg, up to 3:1 vs a regular Snow Griffin, it would appear.

They are classified as animals. Bring a tracker and, preferably, an easy way to dispose of adds: snow dervishes, manticores and the like roam the wastes and aggro easily.

Go to loc -7000, 1200 in Eastern Wastes. An Elder Snow Griffin and a Snow Griffin spawn close to it, and another pathes by it. The Elders have a far greater chance of dropping an egg, up to 3:1 vs a regular Snow Griffin, it would appear.
