"Boxing"

On live, players could pay for multiple accounts. They could then play multiple accounts at the same time. During the classic era, this was only possible with two physical computers ("boxes"), because programs like EQW (which allowed playing the game in a window) were banned. Later on however the game itself supported windowed mode, and all "two-boxing" (and three-, and four-, and ...) could be done on one computer.

Project 1999 and Boxing

Project 1999 is (legally) not allowed to charge for accounts. This means they have only two options, both of which aren't classic:

  • allow limitless free accounts to play at once: this would follow classic mechanics, but (as virtually every other emulated EQ server has shown) such a server would quickly feel empty as everyone you meet would be "playing with themselves"
  • limit each player to playing one account a time.

Project 1999 chooses the later option, and the "one-box" limit is part of the server's Play Nice Policies.

IP Exemptions

A crucial detail of the boxing rule is that applies to people, not IP addresses ... it's just that on a technical level it's easiest to limit by IP address.

However, if your family members or housemates share an Internet connection, they will share an IP address (well, technically their router does), and only one of you will be able to play at a time.

To get around this, players may request an IP Exemption, by starting a new thread with the "IP Exemption" prefix in the Petition Forum.

Requesting an Exemption

Please keep some things in mind when requesting for an IP exemption

  1. READ - https://www.project1999.com/forums/a...ement.php?f=25 . IP exemptions go a lot smoother when the required information is provided. Also the number of petitions we get where people clearly have not read this sticky and fail to provide basic information we need to research things is quite frankly embarrassing. A evil lizard guide is embarrassed for you
IP Exemption: This is for requesting to be exempt from the limit of 1 connection per IP Address. You may request exemption if you have more than 1 real person playing from the same IP. When posting for this, please include the account names of every person that will be playing from the same IP, as well as the identities (real first names) / relations to those players, and please make sure that at least one character has been created under each account. Please verify the spelling of each account you specify. This format works best: Real first name - Relationship - Loginserver Account Name If you fail to provide us the format we have requested it will delay your request. If you have requested an IP Exemption in the past please provide those accounts too. This will fix the "Temporary IP ban" error.
  2. Provide previous IP exemptions you have gotten in the past if any (failure to do so will slow down your new request as we will respond asking you to list your previous exemptions)
  3. IP exemptions are account based not server based, they also don't expire. If you have standing IP exemptions on Blue provided you are using the same accounts for Green you are already good to go
  4. IP exemptions are not for boxing (duh) or quick swapping between characters. We are going to start issuing warnings on this (Yes we can see it). Abusing IP exemptions for quick swapping between characters is going to start getting warnings and IP exemptions removed. Menden made a lovely post about this with more detail you may find it here - https://www.project1999.com/forums/s...d.php?t=336524
  5. Use common sense - If you already have a paragraph long list if IP exemptions then keep using those. Yes we realize people put different characters on different accounts (I do so myself) But that doesn't mean you need an IP exemption on every single one nor does it mean are we likely to grant it. A few IP exemptions is all anyone really needs to play with their family / friends. (TLDR; limit your requests if you have a lot of accounts to the ones most important to you and your family/friends that you want to play together) </ul> For all those players who already include required information when they fill out petitions thank you, it saves us time and allows us to process things more quickly

Can't People Lie?

Players can "lie", either literally in their petition request, or technically, by running multiple clients through multiple IP addresses (eg. via a VPN). Those who do so might even get away with it ... for awhile.

But remember, EverQuest is a social game. No matter how careful you are, all it takes is one person noticing "those two characters act like they're being played by one person" to get a GM to investigate, and subsequently ban both accounts.

Such a player will then have put all of that effort into playing two accounts for however long, with nothing to show for it ... when they could have just enjoyed playing a single account, like everyone else on the server.
