Where to Get the Software
As it says on the Project 1999 Guidebook:
- In order to play on Project 1999 you must obtain a copy of Everquest: Titanium Edition. Only a clean Titanium install will work. You must acquire this on your own as we cannot distribute it, however there are many places to accomplish this. You do not need a valid CD Key.
Because Project 1999 can't distribute the client, one very common question newcomers ask is "where can I get it?" This question is slightly tricky to answer, but you basically have two options: physical or digital.
IMPORTANT DETAIL: Because this page is hosted by Project 1999, the rest of this page can only speak in generalities and hints. However, there is another community of Project 1999 players, on a site called Reddit, and they are not bound by the same restrictions.
Option #1: Acquire The Physical Disks
This option is simple: beg, borrow or buy the Titanium Installation CDs. If you aren't lucky enough to still have some from long ago, perhaps one of your gaming friends do? A quick social media post might turn up an unexpected copy.
If you can't get a copy in your social network, you'll need to buy it, and since it's such a specific item, you're unlikely to find it at a local garage sale or flea market (though you could try). That means you'll want EBay, where copies of the discs can sell for $50- $150
Keep in mind that after you install EQ, you can backup your installation folder or make copies of the discs themselves, and then re-sell the original discs.
Option 2: Acquire a Digital Copy
If you don't own a copy, or know someone who does, and don't want to spend $100+ on 15+ year obsolete software, you'll have to go digital. Again, the easiest solution is friends: if you know anyone who plays on P99, they can simply "zip up" their installation directory and share it with you.
But if not, you need something like EBay for digital downloads, but you won't find Titanium on Steam or any official app store. This means that you'll have to search for somewhere ... less official. Somewhere that's kind of like "EBay", but for Project 1999, like a "Project 1999 Bay" or "The P Bay" ... maybe try Googling for something like that ...
Option 3: Acquire a Digital Copy From a Safe Source
If you can find a reputable organization which is known for archiving old software, webpages, etc., they might have an archive of the Titanium software (and you could get it from them safely, without fear of viruses).
Is Downloading a Copy Online a Moral/Legal Issue?
A wiki page is no lawyer, so you'll have to answer that yourself, but here are some facts and history (see Wikipedia's EverQuest Page for more).
- Sony Online Entertainment once owned the copyright on the Titanium software.
- Their business model was selling online subscriptions, not selling software itself (in fact, future versions of the software would be given out for free)
- Years later Daybreak Games acquired the copyright on the (now very obsolete) software
- Daybreak later made an agreement with Project 1999 and endorsed them ...
- ... but, they did not give them a license to distribute the client
- Daybreak later made an agreement with Project 1999 and endorsed them ...
- Companies generally don't take legal action against users of 15+ year old obsolete (and otherwise worthless) software that has no impact on their business model.
- Project 1999 has been enjoyed by thousands of players for many years (and most don't own physical copies of the software)
- Whenever you download things from new places on the internet, you should always use anti-virus software.
