Editing Standards

From Project 1999 Wiki
Jump to: navigation, search

Wiki editors are normally very isolated: each editor improves what they can, separate from anyone else. Somehow though, we all manage to work together and improve the wiki.

However, when multiple editors disagree about whether some content belongs, things can get a bit too social, so this page attempts to clarify what does and doesn't belong in the wiki.

Contents

Standards

This is a Classic EverQuest Wiki

All content on this site should be related to the game of EverQuest circa 1999-2001, or Project 1999's modern re-creation of it. Any other content, including out-of-era content, content from other games, or real-life player (not character) information, is prohibited.

(NOTE: Wiki admins have deleted over a thousand pages of spam content: please don't make us delete more.)

Always Edit to Make the Wiki Better for Everyone

In general, when a player edits a page to say a certain mob has a certain HP, it's assumed they did so after somehow determining that mob's HP. If they made a mistake in their calculation, that's ok, because they were still doing their best to make the wiki better for everyone.

However, if a troll changes a mob to have the wrong HP on purpose, or renames the mob to "Bob" (eg. because Bob is a forum member they dislike, and they want to insult him somehow), then it's clear that edit wasn't made in the wiki's best interest, and the editor will face sanctions (likely a temporary ban for their first offense, and a permanent one if they continue to edit with bad intentions).

In other words, no one will ever be punished for honestly trying to improve the wiki, but they may be punished anytime they edit with an intention other than communal improvement.

The Wiki is Only for Communal Info (With Some Exceptions)

In general, our wiki is like an encyclopedia, which means it should only contain information that is neutral or generally agreed upon.

However, we do have exceptions: personal opinions are allowed on personal pages. In general, this means a page with someone's name in the title, such as a Magelo page, or a named guide page.

A Note About Bringing Forum Fights to the Wiki

This is really just a part of standards #2 and #3, but I'd like to emphasize that the wiki is not in any way an "official judge" ... which means changing a page to support your side in an argument doesn't help you win that argument.

If any information is "controversial" (there are two or more sides reasonably disagreeing over it), it only belongs in the wiki on personal pages, such as a named guide page; it does not belong in the general (ie. the encyclopedia part) of the wiki.

Getting Help

If you believe the wiki was edited in a way that intentionally violates the above standards, please contact Loramin or another wiki administrator, via wiki talk or (preferably) via the forum PM system.
