== Equipping an  EverQuest Character ==

There are a lot of items in this game, but only some are useful, and of those only some offer a "sweet spot" of availability/affordability and utility.  For instance, you probably won't go out of your way to get an item that adds one more AC (though you'll equip it if you happen to loot it)... but almost everyone buys or quests the {{:Journeyman's Boots}, because the utility of getting to move faster is so huge.

This page strives to detail such "sweet spot" items, in general.  For class-specific gear suggestions, see the appropriate class page, eg. [[Equipping a Druid]] or [[Equipping a Shaman]].

== Shopping Categories ==

You can get more AC (or most stats) from a variety of armor pieces, but there are only a handful of items that allow you to breathe underwater.  Let's look at the more interesting things gear can offer beyond just stat.

==== Haste ====

There are two types of haste items, permanent ("always on") and triggered (aka buff or clicky haste).  The [[Haste Guide]] has a more thorough explanation.

==== Permanent Haste ====

Every permanent haste item available is listed in the [[Haste Guide#Permanent_Haste_Items | Haste Guide's list]].  However, a few items are especially popular and worth noting.

The two most popular first haste items for lower-level characters are the {{:Silver Chitin Hand Wraps}} (the most affordable haste item, only available in Velious) and the {{:Flowing Black Silk Sash}} (the most classic early haste item).

In contrast, the best haste items are NO DROP, and can only be acquired by raiding.  However, the most popular droppable high-end haste item is the {{:Cloak of Flames}}.  In Velious the (almost as good) {{:Cloak of Crystalline Waters}}) is also a popular choice.

==== Triggered Haste ====
 
Similarly, a list of [[Haste Guide#Triggered Haste Items (Buff Haste)|every triggered haste item]] is also available ...but it's a lot shorter.

Undoubtedly the most popular option is the {{:Eyepatch of Plunder}}.  Unlike most other options, which only have a limited number of charges, this item is limitless.

In fact, if you don't want a charged item, your only other options are the Monk-only {{:Robe of the Whistling Fists}} and {{:Celestial Fists}}, Ranger-only {{:Dark Cloak of the Sky}}}}, or Bard-only {{:Lute of the Howler}} (which adds 40% haste through [[Illusion Werewolf]]).

** Pet summons (for faster early-level leveling)
