A faction in EverQuest is any group of mobs/NPCs that are aligned. There are literally hundreds of faction groups, but "Good" and "Evil" is the most conventional separation. Each player has their own faction standing with every faction.
</div>
+
Faction
+

 +
A player's standing is stored as a number, but players cannot see that number: they can only see one of several different faction messages which correspond to certain faction numbers.  The numerical values for changing between different con levels has always been debated (e.g. scowling is -1000 or below).

As an Enchanter, I've always worried about faction. I'm sure Iksar are in the same boat, so I decided to look up every quest I could find that gave only positive faction hits, and no negative ones. The now defunct Iksar Faction Guide goes into great detail for Iksars, but it involves a lot of back-and-forth with raising one faction, lowering another, and then going back to raise the faction you lowered.
+
The following numbers are originally based on a 2011 Uthgaard GM post, but have since been adjusted.  They may be incorrect, but should be close to accurate (if not accurate):

Some of these quests require a minimum faction to be able to complete. Some you will not be able to do without killing various groups of mobs (namely, Gnolls, Deathfist Orcs, Kobolds and Aqua Goblins) or without an illusion, a wolf form, a faction-raising spell, a sneak, an invis, or a feign death (verify this last one?). Before going to do any of these quests, make sure to con the applicable quest NPC and all other NPCs within aggro range using your chosen faction-raising method to make sure you are safe.

A note of advice from the defunct Iksar Faction Guide: When doing quests, I have found out that one can turn in up to 16 items at a time. This was only verified with quest that only have one item to turn in, though. You can hand in 4 stacks of 4 of that item, and you will get 16 faction hits. I have tried with more, but it does not work. I also suggest switching to windowed mode while trading. That way, you will not have to reopen your inventory after each turn in.

Important Note About Wiki Faction Numbers For Mobs and Quests
 +
Keep in mind that while the wiki is usually accurate about which factions a monster or quest will impact, and whether it will have a positive or negative impact ... the specific numbers provided  were taken from a non-classic source. They are very often incorrect, and usually suggest much larger positive gains, or lower negative gains.

{| cellspacing="0" cellpadding="4" width="100%" border="0"
+
Since there is no objective way to measure faction numbers without repeating the same quest, or killing the same mob ... many, many times, it will likely be impossible to ever make all of the wiki's numbers accurate.  However, if a player does research a particular mob's/quest's faction hits, they are encouraged to leave a note about it on the mob/quest page.

<span style="font-weight:bold;">You say, 'Hail, Sergeant Caelin'</span>

Sergeant Caelin says 'Hail, ______. You have nothing to fear from the gnolls. My men and I have been sent from Qeynos to help defend Fort Jaggedpine should those worthless curs make the mistake of assuming this will be a place of easy plunder. I've fought and slain scores of gnolls in my time. Were I not bound to my post here I would go forth and drive them from their dark cave to the north myself. However, I can offer you a [bounty], should you choose to take such a mission upon yourself.'

You say, 'What bounty?'

Sergeant Caelin says 'lf you choose to go and fight against the gnolls, I shall offer a bounty for every gnoll canine that you return to me. You look a bit more adventurous then many of those that live in this settlement. They seem a bit [docile].'

You say, 'How docile?'

Sergeant Caelin says 'Perhaps it comes from living in harmony with nature for an extended period of time but they are more concerned with trading food recipes and doing arts and crafts. I have offered to give them some basic training in the arts of war but they seem to have no interest. This is a dangerous world in which we live and failure to acknowledge that has meant the downfall of many a society. I won't let this happen on my watch, provided my [men] are on their toes.'

You say, 'What men?'

Sergeant Caelin says 'Guard Bossamir is a model soldier and a good man. I'm happy to have him watching my back. That Finewine character however, he is not worth the cost of the sword he wields. All he does is whine and complain. He was born with a silver spoon in his mouth and his family enrolled him in the guard to teach him some discipline but I've had no luck with him. He hasn‘t even turned in a [shift report] for weeks. Captain Tillin will bust me down to private if I don't deliver those soon.'

You say, 'What shift report?'

Sergeant Caelin says 'You have been helpful in our defense efforts. However, I can not be too careful about whom I trust with carrying this information. If you truly consider yourself an ally to Qeynos then no doubt you have assisted the city in its defense before. Show me your Qeynos Badge of Honor and I'll know I can trust you fully. I'll place my mark upon it should anyone question your authority to do this service for me.'

Gnolls that drop the canines are in the cave northeast of the village.

Upon turning in a Gnoll Canine:

Sergeant Caelin says 'Good work, that is one less gnoll we need to worry about!'

Faction, Kunark
Some of these quests require a minimum faction to be able to complete. Some you will not be able to do without killing various groups of mobs (namely, Gnolls, Deathfist Orcs, Kobolds and Aqua Goblins) or without an illusion, a wolf form, a faction-raising spell, a sneak, an invis, or a feign death (verify this last one?). Before going to do any of these quests, make sure to con the applicable quest NPC and all other NPCs within aggro range using your chosen faction-raising method to make sure you are safe.

Cabilis Faction
A note of advice from the defunct Iksar Faction Guide: When doing quests, I have found out that one can turn in up to 16 items at a time. This was only verified with quest that only have one item to turn in, though. You can hand in 4 stacks of 4 of that item, and you will get 16 faction hits. I have tried with more, but it does not work. I also suggest switching to windowed mode while trading. That way, you will not have to reopen your inventory after each turn in.

Cabilis contains six main faction groups:

NOTE: In original classic, once your faction was capped with Iksar Troopers, you were unable to raise it with anywhere else in Cabilis as they all became capped (even if you were at scowling). I'm not sure if it is this way currently on P99, but please be aware of the possibility. It was later fixed on live.

Although there are numerous player derived faction tables floating around the Internet, the actual faction table information is buried in the game executable itself. Other than the introduction of the new Ally faction during the release of Velious, the faction ranges never changed during Classic EQ. The game executable never defines an upper or lower bound for the top and bottom most factions; that is handled server side.

The best camp spot, if you don’t have a tracker, is the couple of buildings at the south of the zone, north of the Frontier Mountains zone line; a number of static spawns and wanderers. Berzerkers seem to be on the general sarnak spawn table.

This seems to be the only way to raise Brood of Kotiz faction, and also raises Legion of Cabilis

SKs need to be non-KoS with necros; necromancers interested in doing the skullcap quest need to reach amiable with Brood of Kotiz. 150 – 200 iksar kills will allegedly take you to glowers with necros. There are several camps of low level iksar outcasts that you can use for this: the caves in Warsliks Woods, before the zone to LOIO; several camps of three in huts in WW; and the camp of four NE of the explorer tower in LOIO. The cave in Field of Bone is on a very slow respawn timer, so I don’t recommend there. The caves in WW have 12 – 15 spawns on a 16 minute timer, but you need to pay full attention for 4-6 minutes to kill them all. The hut SE of the zone to The Overthere has the advantage that you can let him do most of the killing; overnight here should be enough for faction.

Goblins in Warsliks Wood – These give faction for the Legion of Cabilis and for the Inhabitants of Fironia Vie. Good to raise this faction if you think you'll end up getting KoS to Venril Sathir eventually as you will be unable to return to the outpost in The Overthere.

There are many level ranges of these. A Goblin Thief (lvl 2), A Goblin Scout (lvl 2-4), A Goblin Watcher (lvl 3-5), A Goblin Outrider (lvl 5-6), A Goblin Hextracer (lvl  7-8), A Goblin Hunter (lvl 8-10), A Goblin Bonecaster (lvl 10-12), A Goblin Skirmisher (lvl 11-13), A Goblin Witchdoctor (lvl  13-15), A Goblin Battlemaster (lvl 14-16), A Goblin Bloodtracer (lvl 16-18), A Goblin Aggressor (lvl 17-19), A Goblin Pit Fighter (lvl 19-21), A Goblin Soothsayer (lvl 19-21), A Goblin Warrior (lvl 20-22), A Goblin Coward (lvl 20-23), Goblin Warlord (lvl 24), A Goblin Messenger (lvl 38), A Frantic Goblin (lvl 40), A Shady Goblin (lvl 40).

The lower level goblins are closer to the West Cabilis and Field of Bone entrances, while the higher level ones are in forts in the center of the zone. See the map for details.

Alternate Step 1: Item Turn-In Quests

If you can, the fastest way to get Legion faction is to collect weapons in Veksar (lvl 55+) and hand them in the the NPC in Lake of Ill Omen until you reach dubious with the Legion. I haven’t done this, but I believe roughly 10 or more hand ins (40 weapons) will be required. If you kill explorers until you have 6 stacks of knives, you should have high enough legion faction to hand in.
+

+

+
The next best is the explorer knives quest; you will need roughly 6 stacks of these to max your faction. (Note: This is Velious era content not yet added on P99.) 4 – 5 stacks will be required to reach non-KoS with other factions; another 4 – 5 stacks if you need to become warmly or better. The explorers are in Lake of Ill Omen, between the Warsliks Woods and Cabilis zones. NOTE: This will bring down your Fironia Vie faction!
+

+

+
Step 2: Bring Out Yer Dead!
+

+

+
Hand in bone chips in vast numbers to Trooper Mozo in Field of Bone until you are non-KoS to merchants, shamans, etc. This is slower than the explorer knives, but without the FV faction hits.  Note that the wandering crusaders in the area (Quarg and Bhodli) are on different factions. One is on Crusaders and the other is on Scaled Mystics.
+

+
Once you reach dubious to Iksar troopers head over to Kurn's Tower in Field of Bone or any other spot where you can get a LOT of bonechips (this will take many bags of bonechips). Kurn's Tower is the most convenient place because of its location.
+

+

+
There are two ways to do the turn-in:
+

+

+
* Option 1 is to quickly feed as many stacks of 4 bonechips(remember 4 stacks at a time) to Trooper Mozo in the 4-6 minute window and retreat before the Crusaders go on patrol, however this makes it difficult and the Crusaders might not even leave and return in sync making it even harder.
+

+

+
* Option 2 is to stand behind Trooper Mozo in the corner by that lamp thing right up against the wall. SLOWLY take tiny steps forward until you are able to hand Trooper Mozo the stacks of bonechips(you're not close enough if you're right in the corner behind the lamp).
+

+

+
You should be able to give as many stacks as you want from this location WHILE the Crusaders walk past.. this is the method I used.. it was quite unnerving to have some red at level 48 shadowknight go walking past you repeatedly at that distance without turning me into a bloodstain on the ground, but it MUCH easier to give lots of bonechips without interruption.

Latest revision as of 23:50, 10 May 2025

A faction in EverQuest is any group of mobs/NPCs that are aligned. There are literally hundreds of faction groups, but "Good" and "Evil" is the most conventional separation. Each player has their own faction standing with every faction.

A player's standing is stored as a number, but players cannot see that number: they can only see one of several different faction messages which correspond to certain faction numbers. The numerical values for changing between different con levels has always been debated (e.g. scowling is -1000 or below).

The following numbers are originally based on a 2011 Uthgaard GM post, but have since been adjusted. They may be incorrect, but should be close to accurate (if not accurate):

P99 faction numline D.png

Standing Amount Net Consequences
Ally 1051 to 2000 950 Required by Kael and Claw of Veeshan Armor Quests.
Warmly 701 to 1050 350 Required for Di`Zok Signet of Service.
Kindly 451 to 700 250 Required by Thurgadin armor quests
Amiable 51 to 450 400 Your pet is set to this faction level. Required for some quests.
Indifferent -49 to 50 100 Sneak/Invisibility sets your faction to this level. Required for many quests with rewards. Favorable vendor prices.
Apprehensive -50 to -449 400 Vendors will deal with you at this level, at unfavorable prices.
Dubious -450 to -699 250 The lowest your faction can be without being KOS. Vendors will not deal with you.
Threatening -700 to -1049 350 Kill-on-sight.
Scowls -1050 to -2000 950 Kill-on-sight.

Important Note About Wiki Faction Numbers For Mobs and Quests

Keep in mind that while the wiki is usually accurate about which factions a monster or quest will impact, and whether it will have a positive or negative impact ... the specific numbers provided were taken from a non-classic source. They are very often incorrect, and usually suggest much larger positive gains, or lower negative gains.

Faction Messages

Faction 'could not possibly get any better/worse' messages do not exist until Jun2001. [1]

Changing Faction

Almost every non-animal monster/NPC (save for Beta Neutral) give both negative and positive faction adjustments when killed. For instance, attacking (and killing) Orc Pawn will yield these adjustments:

Killing isn't the only method for faction adjustment. Most quests give faction adjustment. For instance, completing Orc Picks yields:

Other mechanics

 • Undead will almost always aggro, no matter what the level difference is.
 • Most NPCs who are low enough level below yours will often not aggro.
 • Threateningly NPCs will eventually aggro, but may delay for several server ticks depending on your distance.
 • Sneaking in front of an NPC will improve your chance for avoiding aggro on a server tick.
 • Scowls will immediately aggro on server ticks.
 • Sitting negates faction and level advantages to avoid aggro.

Glumf's Spectacular Faction Guide

For those of you who have taken up the factionquest sword, here is an in-depth guide that you may find useful in untangling the spiderweb of factions that this game has to offer. Glumf's Spectacular Faction Guide. The most comprehensive guide out there!

Iksar Faction Guide

As an Enchanter, I've always worried about faction. I'm sure Iksar are in the same boat, so I decided to look up every quest I could find that gave only positive faction hits, and no negative ones. The now defunct Iksar Faction Guide goes into great detail for Iksars, but it involves a lot of back-and-forth with raising one faction, lowering another, and then going back to raise the faction you lowered.

The above information does not seem to apply to Green, as no Quest NPC would allow me to attempt to give even 2 of a stackable item and instead said you may only give 1 item per slot. - May the 4th be with you, 2022
