Skill Baking

Welcome to the wonderful (if slightly gruesome) world of EQ Baking! To be an adventurer means more than going where no civilian would dare to tread. It also means having adventurous tastebuds!

Although it is perfectly feasible for some to buy food from merchants, others will find it easier to make meals on the go. Many baking recipes can be anything from snacks to hearty meals, and there are even special recipes that can give the average adventurer a temporary boost in abilities, or assist in quests. Whether it's an easy wolf sandwich while you're on your way to somewhere, or a wedding cake for a ceremony, baking has a lot to offer to those who aren't content with the standard fare sold by merchants.Baking requires a number of products from other tradeskills for certain recipes, but the good news is that most can be purchased from other players and may be used more than once, so there's no need to go out and master, say, blacksmithing before you start.

Disclaimer: This entry is not meant to imply that the killing and eating of fellow adventurers, especially gnomes, is beneficial. Have a gnome shaped cookie instead.

Note: The maximum possible baking skill is 200, until the release of Velious on p1999.

Cookware

Baking has several items required for the various recipes.

• Ovens may be found in any starting city and are usually located near the baking merchants.

• Spits and mixing bowls may be found on merchants along with the basic ingredients. Spits work just like portable ovens and can be used as extra storage in a pinch. Mixing bowls, also able to be made by potters, are for cold preparation and are often needed for preliminary steps. In P1999, it's best to switch to the Experiment window before attempting to use these objects.

• Muffin tins, cookie cutters, pie tins, bread tins, cake rounds, skewers, filleting knives, pots, smokers, non-stick frying pans, and dairy spoons require blacksmithing skills to create. All these items are good for multiple uses and will be returned upon both success and failure.

Ingredients

Bakers collect their ingredients from three basic sources: Merchants, looting, and foraging or ground spawns. For instance, various meats will be found on their respective animals (or people, ahem), as well as eggs and other body parts. Foraging can get a baker the ingredients for a salad or stew. Merchants sell processed ingredients, like vinegar, flour, garnish, jug of sauces, frosting, spices, and so on.

You need about 10pp and an hour of your time to get to skill 135 (assuming you sell back what you make). Skill ups after that become more time consuming and costly.

Ingredients for 1-135:

Step 1: Batwing Crunchies

If Good:

• Go to West Freeport
• Lysa Truegreen (2nd floor of caster guild): buy 10 stacks of Bat Wings
• Pincia Brownloe (Building across from monk guild): buy 10 stacks of frosting

Note: Pincia Brownloe appears to be willing to sell to anyone. (Every character I've tried so far anyway, including an iksar necromancer.)

If Evil:

• Go to East Commonlands
• Katha Firespinner (Inn near WC zoneline): buy 10 stacks of Bat Wings
• Go to Neriak Commons]]
• Niz L'Crit (refined palate, next to bank): buy 10 stacks of frosting

If Iksar:

• Go to Field of Bone
• Klok Acet (near entrance to Cabilis): buy 10 stacks of Bat Wings
• Go to East Cabilis
• Klok Sweetzie (near bank): buy 10 stacks of frosting

THEN:

• Go to your favorite oven (or use a spit if you want to lug one around)
• Make Batwing Crunchies till skill 46: 1 Bat Wing, 1 Frosting.

If Good:

• Tanlok Harson (port authority at dock): buy 30 stacks of fresh fish

If Evil:

• Go to Neriak Commons
• Niz L'Crit (refined palate, next to bank): buy 10 stacks of jug of sauces
• Mariz Ixtaz (near Toadstool): buy 30 stacks of fish

If Iksar

• Go to East Cabilis
• Klok Sweetie (near bank): buy 10 stacks of jug of sauces
• Check all vendors, and try to buy as much fresh fish as you can find.
• Then grab a pole and hit the fishing button till you have 30 stacks. (I told you to go to Freeport)

Note: Iksar necromancers level 34+ with Call of Bones (skeleton illusion) can buy fish from the merchants inside the Port Authority

THEN:

• Go to your favorite oven (or use a spit if you want to lug one around)
• Make Fish Filets till skill 82: 1 Fresh Fish, 1 Jug of sauces
• Sell extra sauces and filets.
• KEEP extra fish

Step 3: Fish Rolls

If Good:

• Go to West Freeport
• Lysa Truegreen (2nd floor of caster guild): buy 20 stacks of Bat Wings
• Go to East Freeport
• Tanlok Harson (port authority at dock): buy 20 stacks of fish (including leftovers from step 2)

If Evil:

• Go to East Commonlands
• Katha Firespinner (Inn near WC zoneline): buy 20 stacks of Bat Wings (including leftovers from step 1)
• Go to Neriak Commons
• Mariz Ixtaz (near Toadstool): buy 20 stacks of fish (including leftovers from step 2)

If Iksar:

• Go to Field of Bone
• Klok Acet (near entrance to Cabilis): buy 20 stacks of Bat Wings (including leftovers from step 1)

• Sell all leftover Fish
• KEEP extra Batwings
• Use Fish Rolls (these are very popular items, especially among monks)

Step 4: Bat Wing Pie

This is where it starts to become more expensive and time consuming. Note: On p1999 you can/may need to use Snake Eggs to make clumps of dough until 142.

If good:

• Go to Lavastorm
• Kill lava basilisks till you get 15 eggs

(It should be noted that different kinds of eggs yield different quantities of dough. Basilisk eggs (farmed in lavastorm) have a great drop rate and provide 15 dough per successful combine.)

• Go to West Freeport
• Pincia Brownloe (unlabeled building next to monk's guild, W Freeport): buy a mixing bowl, 10 stacks of Spices.
• Lysa Truegreen (2nd level of caster building): buy 10 stacks of Bat Wings (including leftovers from step 3)
• Remember these 2 merchants, when/if you run out of stacks just return and stock again.
• Acquire a pie tin (see smithing or pottery recipes for more info. Personally, I recommend pottery. It is far easier and cheaper)

If evil:

• Go to Lavastorm
• Kill lava basilisks till you get 15 eggs

• Go to Neriak Foreign Quarter
• Sal Drana (human side): buy a mixing bowl

• Go to East Commonlands
• Katha Firespinner (inn 3): buy 10 stacks of Bat Wings (including leftovers from step 3)
• Acquire a pie tin (see smithing or pottery recipes for more info. Personally, I recommend pottery. It is far easier and cheaper).

If Iksar:

• Just go to Freeport. There are no eggs in Kunark. Sorry.

Cockatrice Eggs can be foraged in Over There and yield 5 clumps of dough when mixed.

THEN:

• Make clumps of dough in mixing bowl. They are long since trivial for you: 1 basilisk egg, 1 cup of flour, 1 milk (yields 15 clumps of dough)
• Make Bat Wing Pie (in Oven) until skill 142: 1 Bat Wing, 1 Clump of Dough, 1 Spices, 1 Pie Tin (you get the tin back).
• All this can be done in West Freeport. An oven is located in an unnamed building behind the monk guild, over the bridge.
• Sell extra wings and pies.
• Keep extra dough.

Step 5: Cakes

All people:

• Go to Greater or Lesser Faydark
• Hunt Brownies for their parts.
• Make White Chocolate: 2 frosting, 1 spices, 1 brownie parts (in a mixing bowl)
• And/or Make Winter Chocolate: 2 frosting, 1 brownie parts (in a mixing bowl)

THEN:

• Make Wedding cakes till 157 (please confirm trivial skill level): 1 White Chocolate, 1 Frosting, 1 Clump of Dough
• Make Birthday cakes till 162: 1 Winter Chocolate, 1 Frosting, 1 Clump of Dough
• Both require a Cake Round (Smithing or Pottery) which you get back after combine

Step 6: Pixie Powdered Cinnesticks

All people:

• Go to Greater or Lesser Faydark
• Buy or Forage Cinnamon Sticks
• Hunt Pixies for Pixie dust
• Make Pixie Powder Cinnesticks till trivial (>200): 3 Pixie Dust, 1 Cinnamon Stick (in a mixing bowl)

Step 7: Dragon Steaks

All people:

• Get Dragon meat however you can (it is a rare drop off Velious dragons), and make Dragon Steaks till trivial.

Then come back and tell us what the trivial is: 1 Dragon Meat, 1 Jug of Sauces, 1 Spices.
