The Necromancer belongs to the dark brotherhood of the arcane arts, dabbling in death.
Through evil spells, he can animate dead bodies and skeletons to do his bidding, as well as cast spells to leach life from his victims. - EverQuest manual

Description

C necromancer.gif

Necromancers are masters of life and death, utilizing fire, magic, poison, and disease based spells to overwhelm their foes and assist their allies. Their choice to descend into necromancy has alienated them from most old-world civilizations, being killed on sight by most guards and shunned by many merchants. As such, the Necromancer is very independent; few support classes are able to offer anything that the Necromancer does not already have, and items and gear do not carry the same importance as they do for other classes.

The Necromancer's power comes from a deep understanding of the powers of life and death which grant them a number of abilities, including the ability to mesmerize, snare, and fear their enemies, to transfer mana and health to their allies, and lastly, to assert their dominance over the undead with a number of efficient direct damage, charm, root, and lull spells. The Necromancer is classified as anti-natural and has some unique spells to attack animals and plant based mobs.

Some highlights of the Necromancer include their powerful pets, the most efficient Damage over Time (DoT) spells of any class, along with their snare, fear, and root powers, Necromancers are very powerful soloers. Their ability to charm an even more powerful undead pet at higher levels gives them yet another strong soloing option. Plus, they can combine their Fear and Feign Death powers to "split" individual mobs away from the group ... and of course, Feign Death itself provides a way to survive, even without a group, when things go wrong. Although these spells are slower, doing damage only once every 6 second "tick" for a period of time, they use up far less mana than faster "nukes." DoT spells are significantly more mana efficient than DD (Direct Damage) spells.

Necromancers also have access to one of the most powerful mana regenerating abilities in the game: the "Lich" line of spells. These grant a buff that slowly drains their HP (hit points), but in exchange it provides significantly faster mana regeneration, allowing for even more efficient soloing (while also being useful in other circumstances, as well). The line begins with Dark Pact, and when it reaches Call of Bones the Necromancer's skin melts away, turning them into a skeleton.

In groups, and especially on raids, Necromancers rely on their DoTs less. They still deal damage (mainly through their pet), and also transfer health and mana to teammates and provide other utility functions.

Class Highlights

  • DoTs and Feign Death: Not only can Necromancers deliver incredible damage by stacking various DoTs, they can do so without fear of taking aggro from the rest of the group through the use of Feign Death. However, if a group is killing too quickly, DoTs become an inefficient damage source. The Necromancers can switch to DD spells or utility which are both valuable.
    • Spells That Avoid Resists: Another unique attribute of some Necromancer DoT spells is that their Lifetap and Blood Boil spell lines have resistance modifiers that help them land even on highly resistant enemies.
  • Pulling/Splitting Mobs: While Necromancers are capable pullers, they rarely pull for groups or raids, both because of the long recast time on Feign Death, and because of their inferior cloth armor (Bards, Shadow Knights, Monks, etc. can all pull while taking far more hits). As a result, Necromancers tend to use their splitting abilities far more to separate mobs when soloing.
  • Undead Specific Powers: Necromancers also utilize abilities to root, nuke, lull, and charm the undead. Although limited to undead targets, these spells are more mana efficient and harder to resist than their non-undead focused alternatives, which allow a Necromancer to solo even more efficiently when facing undead. Also, when raiding, Necromancers can use charm on certain undead enemies to get a pet that deals far greater damage (although, due to level limits, not every undead mob can be charmed).
  • Pets: Necromancers are one of only two "primary pet classes" and receive solid, summonable pets throughout their career. While Necromancer summons are not quite as good as Mage summons, they remain solidly good. In addition, Necromancers can charm undead for very strong pets at high level. The Necromancer has three summoned pet varieties as they level up, and all three can be given weapons and armor to make them stronger. At first, only a Warrior pet can be summoned. Later, Necromancers get a Rogue pet which can't tank as well, but deals much more damage (*if* positioned behind a mob to "backstab" it). At later levels Necromancers also get a Monk pet that's in the middle between the other two, but has access to a flying kick (which doesn't require special positioning to do extra damage).
  • Mana Sharing: Necromancers also have access to a line of spells commonly known as "twitch" spells (because in-game the Necromancer twitches when casting them, such as Rapacious Subversion. These spells are cast to give mana to another player, in essence transferring the Necromancer's mana to that player. In groups this can be handy in a pinch, and on raids Necromancers often become "mana batteries" for Clerics or other classes who need it (leaving the damage dealing to other classes since DoTs are inefficient on raids).
  • Mastery Over Death: Even at low levels a Necromancer can easily find any player's corpse, including their own. At high levels a Necromancer can sacrifice other players, effectively "stealing their experience" and storing it in a gem. By using these gems Necromancers can resurrect the dead, although this power is far more limited than that of Paladins or Clerics. Because of their feign death powers, Necromancers can sometimes "save raids" by feigning death after the rest of the raid dies, and then using this ability to resurrect a Cleric.
  • Independence: Necromancers are one of the most independent of all classes, being designed with a number of self-only spells that certain other casters can cast on others (eg. self-only invisibility and self-only evacuation), making it a prime choice for those that plan to solo the majority of their careers. However, because of the wide variety of abilities (many not gained until higher levels), a Necromancer must constantly learn new ways to play their class.
  • Not Just Soloers: Despite being great soloers, Necromancers are also valuable in groups, and make excellent additions to raiding guilds. They provide excellent DPS over long fights, can both heal and provide mana to others who need it (notably Clerics in Complete Heal chains), and on occasion they can even ensure the recovery of a wiped raid.

Creation Guide

Picking the right race

The first thing you have to pick then is your race. Which race you pick will determine the foundation of your character for the rest of your life in Norrath, so it is kind of important you pick one you like and that you will be happy with.

Now in terms of faction, Necromancers are generally hated everywhere, some races are hated more than others; Gnomes, Humans and Erudites are neutral races and will have an easier time building faction (especially gnomes being the least evil of all the Necromancer race choices) vs. a Dark Elf or Iksar, so there is some difference in the races in that respect.

Human

  • Well rounded statistics
  • No low-light vision
  • Low starting Intelligence
  • Highest Charisma

Erudite

  • A number of quests available to them that no other race can do with some decent items
  • Like humans, no low-light vision
  • Highest starting Intelligence
  • High Charisma

Dark Elf

  • Hated everywhere but a couple of other evil towns
  • Harder time building up faction in comparison to the neutral race choices
  • Access to the Thex Mallet and Reaper of the Dead questline (which is believed to be possible to do if you are not a Dark Elf, but requires incredibly high faction)
  • Only Necromancer race that can use "hide." If you combine a successful hide while you feign death then you can clear your aggro list safely
    • Keep in mind, some enemies can see through Hide. However, this is a very useful combination of spell + ability and it shouldn't be overlooked.
  • High starting Intelligence
  • Lower Charisma

Gnome

  • Least hated Necromancer/race combination
  • Easier to build faction with good races to access their areas faster and more efficiently
  • Generally have more access to cities/hubs/zones than other Necromancer races
  • Access to the Tinkering skill which can offer some interesting crafting options
  • High Starting Intelligence
  • Lower Charisma

Iksar

  • Hated in all cities besides their own, even those of other evil races.
  • A race experience penalty of 20%. Other races have no penalty.*
  • Health regeneration bonus (chart below)
  • A natural AC bonus
  • Access to Forage for food and water
  • Low Starting Intelligence
  • Lowest Charisma
  • - Note: All Necromancers are also subject to a 10% class penalty on Green server before the Jan.'01 patch. For Iksar Necros this multiplies to a combined 32% (110% * 120%).

If you are concerned with min/maxing, Iksar regeneration should not be underestimated. As the chart below shows, the Iksar Necromancer will lose health slower, which ultimately means that an Iksar Necromancer can sustain mana boosters easier and longer. This will mean decreased downtime, lowering the amount of time you need to Lifetap, and generally more stable play. The chart shows the differences between Iksar and non-Iksar for each spell under the Lich spell line in the rows, while across the top of the chart in columns it offers the different positions that affect the rate of health regeneration.

Spending Your Bonus Points

Bonus points were intended to let you customize your character in a small but meaningful way. Necromancers are amazing in that they are pretty good even with low stats. A lot of their power is hard coded into their spells. As an example, end game mana regen can reach 32 mana per tick while standing, if playing during Kunark expansion or later, and of course, more while sitting. The need for huge mana pools is less important for Necromancers than for Wizards, Mages or Clerics who do not have this advantage. After reading, you can decide for yourself, and unlike some classes, even dumping all your points into a poor stat will not break your Necromancer, as they are very self-sufficient.

  • Strength - Main benefit is carrying more weight. Weight reduction bags solve this problem and no points are recommended to be spent here.
  • Stamina - Affects your maximum Hit Points. You receive more HP per Stamina from your native Stamina than from gear. Stamina is beneficial for Necromancers because they frequently go up and down in health in combat even if they are not being hit.
  • Dexterity - The rate of raising weapon skills and weapon procs (effects) going off. Necromancers are not a melee class, and beyond around level 8 you will almost entirely give it up.
  • Agility - Agility adds to your avoidance. There is a penalty below 75 AGI, so you will want to put 5 points in this if you plan to roll an Erudite.
  • Wisdom - Effects the learning of general and craft skills if higher than Intelligence.
  • Intelligence - The main caster stat for Necromancers. Adds to how much maximum mana you gain each level, effects the speed at which you learn spell skills, craft skills and general skills. This is a great stat, both for power and for convenience. Your skills will raise faster and you can cast more spells before having to meditate. Necromancers have incredibly fast mana regen, but more maximum mana will benefit you.
  • Charisma - Will affect resists on undead only lulls beginning with Numb the Dead. Also affects vendor prices. It is not recommended to put points into this attribute.
Allocation Recommendations
Solo/Grouping: 25 Stamina and 5 Intelligence | 5 Stamina and 25 Intelligence | Or anything in between.
Raid Min/Max: 25 Stamina, 5 Intelligence
If Erudite: 5 Agility instead of 5 to any secondary stat

Health vs. Mana

Due to the mechanics of Lich, passively reducing the Necromancer's health every tick in exchange for a boost in mana per tick, Necromancers have, in effect, two pools of mana; the mana they directly draw from spells, and their health pool acting as a mana battery, constantly being drained to provide more mana for the Necromancer's use. So how much health and how much mana should you have?

We should begin by understanding that each of these have a certain advantage. A sizeable mana pool means that when you are coming out of an extended rest (meaning that you will be at full mana and health), you will be able to cast more spells in a small period of time. A sizable health pool means that while you are fighting and engaged in combat, the negative effects of Lich will not be as pressing, and you will have more wiggle room in which to use Lifetaps to restore your health.

A great deal of this comes down to personal taste and your own playstyle. Following is a series of considerations that one should keep in mind when finding their "sweet spot" for a mana/health ratio. Just remember that both health and mana are effectively power to fuel your spells, but that each of them works differently: Mana is a readily available, immediately exploitable resource to cast your spells, while Health is not immediately available, but makes your life much easier and safer.

Tips and Notes

Obviously, when your HP is full (or very close) you want to focus on gaining Mana; Lifetapping would be wasteful. The same is true in reverse: Lich is wasteful when your Mana is full.

When neither is full, your priorities should depend on two things: your "squishiness" (relative to the mob), and your pace. If you are facing tougher foes (ie., feeling squishy) you'll want to keep your HP higher, as mana won't help if the mob gets some lucky hits in and kills you. At the same time, you'll also want to take into account whether you are facing a steady stream of individual mobs, or bursts of several. If you can't rely on having enough time for your Lich spell to provide more mana in-between fights, you may want to focus on keeping your mana higher in-between fights.

However, all of this boils down to one simple goal. Never be full health, never be full mana.

Regarding Charisma, it should be noted that your lull spells (such as Numb the Dead and Rest the Dead) use Charisma as part of their formulas, but most would agree it is not worth gearing for. This does not mean that it is worthless to do so, but it is worth considering if you are running into problems using these spells.

As an aside; some may claim that the Necromancer's Screaming Terror Mesmerize or Charm spell lines are affected by Charisma. While this may be true for some other EQEmu servers, this is not correct for Project 1999.

Religion

Religion is not a huge concern to Necromancers as they are already hated. Most choose to worship either Cazic-Thule, or Innoruuk, the Prince of Hate, as it ties in well with their role. The other choice is Bertoxxulous. Necromancers cannot be Agnostic, as their dark powers are directly linked to their worship of their god.

Innoruuk is the best choice for faction in Neriak, which is the most convenient city for newer non-Iksar Necromancers.

Iksars are limited to choosing Cazic-Thule.

Focus Effect: Minion of Hate

Class: NEC
Race: HUM ERU DEF GNM IKS

. Similar to the Magician pet focus items, this focus item makes the pet larger in size. It also provides a +1 level bonus to all summoned pets from spell levels 46-60. This allows for pets that can exceed the hit points, melee, and spell damage listed in the tables. The +1 level is added to the RNG of the level of pet you would have summoned. When you finish casting a pet spell, RNG will determine the level of pet you summoned in that pet's level range. If using the focus item for that pet, the pet's level will be RNG+1.
As an example, the Emissary of Thule pet has a level range of 43-47. When you cast that spell, at the end of the cast RNG determines the pet level to be level 47.
If you are using the focus item, it adds +1 to the RNG so the pet would be level 48.

    Gearing

Please keep in mind that gear listed here may not be exhaustive, but they do tend to include the most useful of each category. Also keep in mind that you want to strike a balance between HP and Mana to maximize your effectiveness. Remember that 1 INT = 10 mana (and it drops significantly after 200), and 1 STA = 2 health, and that the items listed are droppable only.

NOTE: Gear listed here is not listed as "Best In Slot." Due to the way HP and mana play off each other, the items you wear influence the value of other items you wear. In other words, Pre-Planar gear is not necessarily less useful than an item that is Planar, or Planar relative to Kunark. Pre-Planar Gear refers to items that one can acquire before reaching planar raiding. These are by and large your BoEs. Planar Gear refers to items that are earned from raiding, and for the most part (with the exception of some Sky items and a few raid boss drops) are BoP. Kunark is about Kunark era changes to gearing, and items that are found in Kunark content.

Check Necromancer Equipment for the full list of gear usable by necromancers.

    An Agenda for Future Research

The purpose of this section is to point out the shortcomings of this guide and what we still need more detailed information on.

    1) Pet Levels. Anyone who has summoned a number of pets will know that they can con differently, often leading Necromancers to resummon until they get a dark blue (con) pet, since that one is a higher level. Many of the pet levels listed on the main spell pages, and on this guide, are single static numbers (i.e., a level 29 pet), even for there to be a light blue con, and a dark blue con, it must be Level 28-30. This could be researched if one were to gather a few people of approximate level to the pet spell, and summon it, and find who it cons white to, and do this a number of times to determine the low and high ranges of the pet level.

    2) Magic Resistance variance on the Shielding spell line. The original page for the early Shielding spells does not have a MR buff listed, but when a level 60 casts these spells, a static number is given. Presumably, a lower level Necromancer who first gets the spell is going to have a different number. A Necromancer that just got each level of Shielding would need to measure how much MR they get to give us the minimum increase to MR that spell gives. The listed MR is the maximum, as cast by a 60 Necromancer.

    Necromancy

It came to pass some years later that a small group of Erudites discovered the lost art of Necromancy. They were branded heretics and great conflict arose. For the first time in several hundred years, the Erudites fought. They engaged in a civil war not entirely dissimilar to that which they had loathed in the past which led them to flee back to the mainland. But there was one very significant difference - they did not use swords and bows, but instead used magic, and the result was terrible.

Hundreds of lives were lost, great buildings and structures destroyed, and eventually the heretics were forced to flee Erudin, to hide and regroup in the southern regions of Odus. In one final battle, great mystic energies were released and an immense hole leading to unknown depths beneath the earth was created. Into the sides of this chasm the heretics built their own city which they called Paineel. And while both sides still seethed with anger and hatred toward one another, their fear of what the last battle had wrought has kept any further conflict at bay.

Thus began the Age of Turmoil.
